"A purposeful arts education at primary level is life-enhancing and is invaluable in stimulating creative thinking and in promoting capability and adaptability. It emphasises the creative process and so ensures that the child’s work is personal and has quality. Attempts at artistic expression are valued, self- esteem is enhanced, spontaneity and risk- taking are encouraged and difference is celebrated. It is this affirming aspect of the creative arts that makes participation such a positive experience. Arts education is integral to primary education in helping to promote thinking, imagination and sensitivity, and arts activities can be a focus for social and cultural development and enjoyment in school." Watts Towers
The Junior Room have been looking at the Watts Towers in California. These were constructions built by an Italian sculptor called Simon Rodia. These towers were built by hand using mud and found objects! They are remarkable in their strength and beauty. For more information, you can click on this link wattstowers.org
The children built their own Towers using playdoh and other found objects. We had fun exploring the best ways to make our structures stay up!!!

Exploring colour and graphic design
Pupils had a lesson on Block Letters, incorporating the letters in their names into their work. They then were able to mix colours, creating many shades and tones using only black, white and one other colour. Striking pieces of work with a strong geometric aspect coming through!
Geometric and Abstract Design- Kandinsky
Art: Seniors explored the work of artist Wassily Kandinsky and produced some striking pieces of art.
Wassily Kandinsky (1866 –1944) was a Russian painter, printmaker and art theorist. He was one of the most important 20th-century artists. He was a major figure in modern art and painted some of the first modern abstract works.
We watched a short tutorial, then thought about our designs and explored mark-making. Finally, the children produced some striking and creative work.
Look out for: geometric shapes, concentric circles, organic shapes from nature, lines and squiggles.

Christmas Paper Craft
'Liffey Swim' by Jack B Yeats
The Junior Room have been visiting the National Gallery of Ireland (virtually, of course!!). We took tours around the rooms, stopping to look at various artworks along the way. We saw the Portrait Room, the Irish Art Room and the Grand Gallery. It was great fun actually! Then we took a closer look at 'The Liffey Swim' by Jack B. Yeats and decided we could give it a go ourselves! The children took to this task so enthusiastically and looked so carefully at the painting in order to reproduce their own. That's how all artists start out - copying from the masters!! I was so impressed with how they captured the colour, tone and atmosphere of the original. I was really taken aback by the results!

Meadowsweet Chalk Drawings
The Junior Room have been participating in some fantastic online Heritage in Schools Workshops. We are working with the lovely Marina Levitina, who is based in County Clare. Marina is passionate about wildlife and we are really enjoying engaging with her! Marina inspires children to connect with the wild plants and trees around them, through the arts and through spending time in nature. We learn about the variety of traditional uses of native Irish plants and trees, while also learning that plants are living beings that play a crucial role in the life of the planet. This knowledge is vital during this time of climate change and biodiversity crisis. As part of these workshops, we had a close look at the meadowsweet and made some lovely chalk drawings of this lovely plant
Gealach na gConlach- The Harvest Moon
An bhfaca sibh an ghealach dheas an tseachtain 's a chuaigh thart? B'í gealach na gconlach- nó an 'stubble moon'. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the autumn equinox. The equinox means that day and night are of equal length and heralds the beginning of cooler weather and longer evenings. In olden times the bright light of the full moon was useful for the farmers as they worked late, saving the harvest. Enjoy our atmospheric art!
Our face mask self-portraits
Wearing face masks has become a new way of life for many people. As well as designing their own vibrant and eye-catching masks , the children were able to express their different personalities (just lift the flap) in this enjoyable art lesson!
The Girl with the Pearl Earring22.01.20. The Junior Room have been looking at the life and work of Jan Vermeer (1632 - 1675). We were very interested to learn that he had 11 children, only painted 36 paintings in his lifetime and tended to paint interior, domestic scenes, which was very unusual at the time. We really like his painting of The Milkmaid and The Girl with the Pearl Earring. We created our own paintings inspired by his work.
